LEEP PROCEDURE

LEEP stand for loop electrosurgical excision procedure.  It is also referred to as large loop excision of the transformation zone, or LLETZ.  This is a new procedure for treating cervical dysplasia.  Cervical dysplasia is an abnormal development of tissue growth in the narrow, lower portion of the uterus, which is called the cervix.  Cervical dysplasia is most frequently discovered from a Pap smear, a test which all women should have done yearly.

PROCEDURE

The doctor looks at your cervix through a colposcope to identify the dysplasia.  He will then numb the area with local anesthesia.  The area of your cervix that is treated is called the transformation zone.  The provider then cuts the abdominal tissue out with a thin wire look that is connected to an electrical unit. The loop is used to scoop out the abnormal tissue in one piece and seal any bleeding blood vessels.  The only sensation you may feel is a slight tingling.  The procedure only takes about 5 minutes. You may have some minor bleeding or spotting the first day or so after the procedure.  For 2 weeks after, you may have a brownish discharge from your vagina caused by your cervix healing.  Your cervix should be totally healed within one month.  Avoid heavy lifting, tampons, doucing, and intercourse for 4 weeks.
